Urgent: The Execution of 40 Political Prisoners
Without Trial is Expected in the Coming Few Hours in Sednaya Prison, Syria

A well connected Source in Sednaya military prison, north-west of Damascus, informed us that the Syrian authority may execute forty prisoners, in the next few hours, against the backdrop of demonstrations and current events in Syria. The Syrian Human Rights Committee has a list of some of those detainees and would share them with concerned human rights organizations and institutions around the world; we are not releasing the names to the public for concerns regarding the safety of the detainees.

Committing this execution, by the Syrian regime, is illegal, these detainees were peaceful and unarmed citizens, they were not given any of the due legal procedure, habeas corpus, trial, nor there is any document condemning these detainees to death, and please note that the authorities had lifted the state of emergency, martial laws and abolished the Supreme State Security Court.

The implementation of the death sentences is a new crime committed by the Authority in Syria in addition to crimes of firing live bullets at peaceful demonstrators, unleashing the regime-sponsored armed gangs (Shabiha) on people, arresting thousands then torturing them and killing those of them who are injured.

These are grave violations of the Syrian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We put the above case in the hands of the international community, human rights organizations, United Nations organizations, and we call upon all of you for immediate intervention to stop the killing, execution and slaughter of Syrian citizens, especially given the fact that the Syrian Human Rights Committee has information regarding continuous executions in Sednaya prison. Later, we have been informed that detainee, Kamal Theban has been executed.
